Lynn's Visit To Boise

Lynn and Sandy spent a whole afternoon in the kitchen

We don't get out of town company at our house in Boise very often. If we're lucky, maybe someone comes about once a year. You can imagine our surprise when this May we got not one, but two visitors. My son Tim came in early May. He didn't really spend much time in Boise. The intent was that he and I do a hiking trip in Utah. It culminated in hiking to The Wave, which requires a very hard to get permit. Now Sandy's sister Lynn was coming for a long weekend. That's a lot of traffic for our house. We were excited!

Lynn was mainly coming to visit and to relax. We didn't plan anything extraordinary. On her first day we went to Garden City and visited Telaya Winery. It was a nice day so we enjoyed a glass of wine on their patio, which is right on the Greenbelt beside the Boise River. We like their wines a lot. In fact, we belong to the wine club there and were able to pick up our current half case of wine while we were there.

Visiting Idaho City

After a glass of wine and some people watching, we just went down the block to the Stagecoach Inn. We figured Lynn would feel right at home because it is just like a good, old-fashioned, Midwest supper club. It's one of our favorite places to go for a good dinner - a steak for me and prawns for Sandy. We had another glass of wine, a good dinner and an excellent dessert. We judged our foray to Garden City to be a success and went home to watch the Brewers beat the Padres. It was definitely a good day.

Next day we decided to travel a bit farther afield and go to Idaho City. In da old days, I used to drive through it all the time on my way to the Sawtooths to go hiking. That changed thirty years ago, when the Banks-Lowman road was paved. It's quicker and more convenient than the Idaho 21 route through Idaho City so now it's the standard route to the Sawtooths. Because of the change, I hadn't been to Idaho City in decades. It was fun for a short visit. There is one street that has old time buildings and wooden sidewalks. There were two touristy shops there where we found some interesting things. Huckleberry everything - jam, soap, candy, fragrances, tshirts - were a big thing.

Two Troublemakers

One of the stores had a photo-prop Western jail setup, so we took turns taking pictures of each other "in jail". We were planning to go to Sasparilla Ice Cream Parlor and Gift, but for some reason it was closed. That was a bit of a disappointment. We did have a good lunch at Trudy's Cafe though. It was crowded when we got there and we were lucky to get the last empty table. Although the food was good, it was annoying that every time the door opened, the air conditioner unit above the door would go on for about two minutes, making a huge racket and blasting cold air over everyone.

That night we watched another Brewer game. It was close, but the Milwaukee pulled out a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

On Saturday, Sandy and Lynn decided to stay home and spend the day baking. That sounded good to me. I spent the afternoon watching the Brewers beat the Twins again while acting as chief taste tester for all the backed goods (a very important job).

Lynn headed back home the next day. It had been a nice visit.
